It’s a fact that a lot of Blood Bike riders are blokes, we have a few female riders but not enough. Of course we have a lot more ladies who help in the ‘back office’ as controllers, fundraisers etc. But 9 times out of 10 if you see a bike, there’s a bloke on it. One thing we all have in common is a love for ‘the milk runs’. Not every controller or rider gets to do one but we all take great delight in knowing that we all help.
A recent tweet from Hearts Milk Bank shows why this is so important to us. As far as we know (we rarely meet patients), we were not involved with this job, but we often work with the Human Milk Bank in Birmingham and Northwest Milk Bank Chester, who are themselves a charity.
If we did not help, they would have to pay to transport milk that is donated freely by selfless nursing mothers to help babies and other mothers, like this one, who cannot themselves breastfeed.
